The aim of the study is to analyze the general theoretical problems of the origin,
development and state of psychotherapy. Views on the essence of psychotherapy are examined in
chronological order, beginning with Ancient history, through Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the New
Ages, and Modern Era. The development of concepts of psychotherapeutic help and their influence
on the understanding of human functioning is discussed.
