CANINE-ASSISTED INTERVENTIONS FOR AT-RISK ARAB ISRAELI YOUTHWITHIN THEIR RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL CONTEXT

This integrative narrative review examines how canine-assisted
interventions may be designed responsibly for at-risk Arab Israeli youth in Israel, with attention to
psychological, developmental, family, educational, social, cultural, religious, professional, and
animal-welfare conditions. Review approach: The review synthesizes the supplied bibliography of
49 sources, including empirical studies, reviews, books, professional standards, institutional
guidance, and religious scholarship. No independent systematic database search was conducted.
Principal synthesis: The literature suggests that canine-assisted interventions may support
engagement, communication, and emotional or educational work for some participants, but these
possibilities depend on voluntary participation, family and community dialogue, clear Arabic
information, religious accommodation, qualified practitioners, safe procedures, and protection of
canine welfare. Acceptance is treated as a relational and institutional outcome rather than an
attitude that participants must be taught. Limitations: The evidence is heterogeneous and includes
little direct research on canine-assisted interventions with at-risk Arab Israeli youth; the proposed
implementation model is conceptual and not validated. Conclusion: Programs should be locally
negotiated, offer meaningful alternatives to nonparticipants, and be evaluated for human outcomes,
acceptability, safety, and animal welfare.
